About XLM
What Is Stellar Lumens (XLM)?
Stellar is a decentralized blockchain network that connects financial infrastructure around the world by allowing users to send money and assets without going through the major centralized payment providers.
Individuals and businesses can generate, transfer, and exchange digital representations of all kinds of assets, including traditional fiat currencies like the U.S. Dollar, real estate, and tokens representing new and existing assets.
Through the Stellar blockchain, users can move assets across borders with less complication, friction, and cost using Stellar’s native cryptocurrency, the Lumen (XLM).
How Does Stellar Work?
The Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP) is based on the Federated Byzantine Agreement (FBA) that enables nodes running the Stellar Core software to vote on transactions until a quorum is reached.
Stellar Core allows users to set up their node in one of three ways — as an Archiver, a Basic Validator, or a Full Validator.
An Archiver publishes the activity of the network in long-term storage but does not participate in consensus.
A Basic Validator keeps track of the ledger and submits transactions for possible inclusion but is not configured to publish history archives.
A Full Validator is the same as a Basic Validator except that it also publishes a history archive containing snapshots of the ledger, including all transactions and their results.
History of Stellar
Jed McCaleb and Joyce Kim co-founded the Stellar network in 2014. McCaleb then went on to found the nonprofit Stellar Development Foundation to support the development and growth of the network.
The Foundation helps maintain Stellar’s codebase, supports the technical and business communities around Stellar, and is a speaking partner to regulators and institutions.
Since then, Stellar has continued to develop applications and expand its use cases to countries around the world.
How To Buy XLM
Buying XLM follows the same protocol as buying other cryptocurrencies.
First, find a crypto platform — like Binance.US — that supports XLM, provides access to other popular cryptocurrencies on the market, offers reasonable fees, and gives you resources and tools to help you make the right choices.
Once you’ve found a platform that works for you, create an account and fund it with fiat currency such as U.S. dollars.
Depending on the platform, you can do this through one of several methods, including:
- ACH from an existing bank account
- Debit or credit card
- Bank or wire transfer
- Other established payment service, such as Apple Pay (check platform for details)
After the money arrives in your account, use those funds to specify how much XLM you want to buy and when you want to buy it. When the transaction is complete, store the XLM in one of two types of crypto wallet: a cold wallet or a hot wallet.
A cold wallet is an offline space like an external hard drive. A hot wallet is an online space typically provided by the platform through which you made the purchase.
How To Sell XLM
Once you’ve opened an account on a crypto platform like Bianance.US, fund the account with fiat currency so you can buy XLM. Another option for funding your account is to transfer XLM from another crypto ecosystem.
When you have XLM in your account, it’s just a matter of deciding how you want to sell it and then choosing from methods such as:
- A market order at the current market price
- A limit order at a future price you indicate
- A stop-limit order (sometimes known as a stop-loss), where you can set a stop price to trigger the sale at market price
Your crypto exchange will transfer fiat currency equal to the value of the XLM you sold. You may use it to purchase other cryptocurrencies or withdraw or transfer it.
How To Trade XLM
If you’ve bought or sold XLM, you can trade it through much the same process.
Open or log into an account on a crypto platform, like Binance.US, that offers trading activities. Fund the account with fiat currency so you can buy XLM, or transfer XLM from another platform.
Once you have XLM in your account, you can start trading to build your portfolio.
Before doing that, however, it’s important to research and analyze the market. Trading XLM, or any cryptocurrency, can get complicated at times, so prepare yourself by creating a strategy and sticking to it.
