About BNB
What Is BNB?
BNB (formerly called Binance Coin) stands for “Build and Build” and is the native cryptocurrency of the Binance ecosystem, which includes the BNB Chain, and other Binance adjacent platforms and exchanges.
You can take advantage of reduced rates when you use BNB to pay for trading fees on exchanges within the Binance ecosystem (including Binance.US).
BNB holders can also earn rewards by staking their BNB on Binance’s popular BNB Chain, which uses a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. On-chain transaction fees (for BNB Chain) are also paid using BNB.
Additionally, BNB can be used in a wide variety of real-world use cases, including donating on Binance Charity, paying for goods and services (both online and off), and covering travel expenses.
How Does BNB Work?
The BNB Beacon Chain and the BNB Smart Chain work together to power the BNB Chain.
The BNB Beacon Chain handles the governance side (such as staking and voting), while the BNB Smart Chain makes it possible to deploy smart contracts on Ethereum virtual machines, manage consensus layers, and offer hubs to other multi-chains.
This helps create a network designed for optimal on-chain trading and makes it possible to offer high liquidity, discounts to users who pay with BNB, and some of the lowest transaction fees in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
Binance regularly conducts coin burns (in which it purchases and permanently destroys BNB) to help control the supply and maintain the scarcity and value of available BNB.
History of BNB
In 2017, Changpeng Zhao, commonly known as “CZ”, founded the Binance exchange. Not long after, BNB was launched as an ERC-20 (Ethereum-based) token to reward and incentivize platform users.
In 2019, Binance launched its proprietary blockchain, BNB Chain, and a new and improved version of the BNB coin native to the BNB chain itself. Existing token holders received the new BNB in exchange for the old ERC-20 BNB tokens.
In the years since, BNB chain has become one of the most widely-used blockchains in the industry, popular for its ultra-low-fees and ease of use. BNB has also grown to become one of the largest cryptocurrencies in the world, with a whole host of dynamic use cases applicable to both the BNB chain and the larger Binance ecosystem.
How To Buy BNB
Buying BNB, the digital asset of the BNB blockchain, is easy and follows the same protocol as buying other cryptocurrencies.
It starts with finding a crypto platform — like Binance.US — that allows you to purchase the digital asset while, at the same time, offering reasonable fees, providing access to other cryptocurrencies, and giving you resources and tools to help you make the right choices.
Once you’ve found the platform that’s right for you, create an account, verify your identity, and fund it with fiat currency (government-backed money such as U.S. dollars).
Most platforms make this easy by offering several different funding options, including:
- Bank or wire transfer
- Debit or credit card
- ACH from an existing bank account
- Other established payment services like Apple Pay (check platform for details)
When the fiat currency reaches your account, you can use it to buy BNB by specifying how much you want to purchase and what rate you are willing to pay (either accepting the current market rate or waiting for a specified price point).
After the buy order is complete, store your BNB in a crypto wallet — either the cold version (an offline space like an external hard drive) or the hot version (an online space typically provided by the platform through which you made the purchase).
How To Sell BNB
Selling BNB follows much the same procedure as buying it. Open an account on a crypto platform like Binance.US, then buy or transfer BNB to that account.
Once the platform registers the cryptocurrency, you can sell it in a few different ways, including via:
- A market order at the current market price
- A limit order at a future price that you indicate
- A stop-limit order (sometimes known as a stop-loss), where you can set a stop price to trigger the sale at market price
When the sale is complete, the funds will be deposited into your account and you can then use the money to buy other cryptocurrencies or pay for other products and services.
How To Trade BNB
If you’ve bought or sold BNB, you can trade it just as easily.
First, open an account on a crypto ecosystem like Binance.US. Second, fund your account with fiat currency so you can buy a specific digital asset. Third, use the platform’s tools and resources to start trading.
Before you jump into trading BNB, research and analyze the market. Then, develop a strategy that will further your financial goals. With that information in hand, you’re ready to trade BNB.
How To Stake BNB
Want to earn crypto rewards without buying, selling, or trading? Try staking your BNB.
When you stake a cryptocurrency, you commit some or all of that type of coin or token in your account toward building and securing the related blockchain network.
After you stake your BNB, you are eligible to receive rewards based on the amount of BNB you’ve staked, transaction fees that accumulate from circulating assets, and new blocks your BNB was used to create.
