What Is Cardano (ADA)?

Cardano (ADA) is a next-generation blockchain and cryptocurrency focused on scalability, flexibility, and sustainability. It’s positioned as a major competitor to Ethereum aiming to bring about positive global change through inclusive access to decentralized finance and digital services.

Similarly to Ethereum, Cardano has its own cryptocurrency: ADA. This crypto serves as the “coin of the realm” for interactions on the Cardano platform.

How Does Cardano (ADA) Work?

Cardano functions like many traditional blockchain platforms. It taps into a widely distributed network of computers running its blockchain protocol to record digital transactions without the use of a centralized oversight authority.

One thing that differentiates Cardano is its commitment to sustainability. As one of the first cryptocurrencies to successfully implement a “proof-of-stake (PoS)” validation model, Cardano helped provide an alternative to the “proof-of-work (PoW)” model (used by many first-generation cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin) that relies on advanced computing power and energy expenditure to validate transactions. Proof-of-stake uses a very different approach in which participants stake the chains’ cryptocurrency to qualify as validators, thus eliminating most of the need to expend energy.

Cardano has set a strategic path of constant improvement to expand what can be done on its platform including supporting smart contracts (automated agreements) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs — unique, collectible digital assets).

All technological updates and improvements on Cardano also undergo a process of peer-reviewed research where they are rigorously challenged before being implemented. Through this process, Cardano aims to ultimately arrive at a blockchain “50 to 100 times more decentralized” than its competitors.

History of Cardano (ADA)

Cardano is often compared to Ethereum, not just because of the platforms’ similar functionality, but also because of their origins. Cardano was launched in 2017 by Charles Hoskinson, one of Ethereum’s co-founders. His goal? Energy-efficient scalability.

Another interesting aspect of Cardano’s history is its roots in scientific research. Its Ouroboros consensus mechanism, for example, emerged from peer-reviewed research by computer science and cryptographic researchers at renowned universities around the world.

The network's name pays homage to the Italian Renaissance mathematician, Gerolamo Cardano, while its native currency (ADA) is an ode to the 19th-century mathematician Ada Lovelace.

How to Buy Cardano (ADA)

Buying ADA, the cryptocurrency of the Cardano platform, works much the same as buying any other cryptocurrencies.

First, find a crypto exchange — like Binance.US — to be your crypto partner. A good exchange will offer reasonable fees, a broad range of cryptocurrencies, and tools and information to help you navigate the world of crypto.

Once you select an exchange, open an account and fund it using a wire transfer, credit or debit card, or link to an existing bank account to deposit fiat currency (government-backed money, such as U.S. Dollars, British Pounds, etc.).

When your account is funded, you are ready to make your first purchase of ADA. Simply specify the amount you want to buy and when. With Binance.US, you can even set your own automated schedule for buying ADA (or any of your other favorite cryptocurrencies) with daily, weekly, bi-monthly, and monthly recurring buys!

Once you’ve purchased your ADA, it’s best to store it safely in a digital wallet, also known as a crypto wallet. This gives you the most complete control over it.

How to Sell Cardano (ADA)

Selling ADA is just as straightforward as buying it. The crypto platform you used to buy ADA will usually allow you to sell it in a few different ways:

  • A market order at the current market price
  • A limit order at a future price you indicate
  • A stop-limit order (sometimes known as a stop-loss), where you can set a stop price to trigger the sale at market price

Your crypto exchange will transfer fiat currency equal to the value of the ADA you sold. You may use it to purchase other cryptocurrencies or withdraw or transfer it.

How to Trade Cardano (ADA)

Trading Cardano is very similar to buying and selling it. But trading can also include swapping one cryptocurrency for another or completing other, more complex financial transactions. You can trade Cardano on Binance.US, which makes it easy by providing all of the right trading tools.

Before you launch into the complex waters of crypto trading, make sure to conduct thorough research using tools and education provided by your crypto partner. And give careful thought to your trading strategy and how ADA and other cryptos might support it.
