What Is Algorand (ALGO)?

Algorand is a decentralized, proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchain network and project that focuses on improving scalability, transaction speeds, and block finalization times with use cases for financial services, decentralized finance (DeFi), fintech, institutions, and the creator economy.

The Algorand network is powered by its native ALGO token.

ALGO holders can use it to:

  • Pay transaction fees on the blockchain
  • Register for a chance to be selected as a block proposer or validator
  • Participate in the Governance Program
  • Vote on important blockchain measures

The ALGO token has a maximum total supply of 10 billion coins.

How Does Algorand Work?

Algorand operates on its proprietary Pure Proof of Stake (PPoS) consensus protocol that allows the network to process multiple transactions quickly without giving up decentralization.

This is in contrast to regular proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchains that rely on a small number of validator nodes to achieve scalability.

Algorand’s PPoS consensus mechanism randomly selects validator nodes from among a pool of users who have created a participation key.

In addition, Algorand doesn’t require a minimum stake — meaning the average user can get involved — and the chance of being selected is directly related to the proportion of the user’s stake.

This allows the Algorand network to finalize blocks on average every 3.7 seconds and run at a rate of 6,000 transactions per second (TPS).

History of Algorand

Algorand was created in 2017 by cryptography pioneer, Turing award winner, and MIT professor, Silvio Micali.

Micali went on to open up the Algorand test network to the public in April 2019 followed by the main network in June 2019. The Algorand ecosystem is managed by The Algorand Foundation and Algorand, Inc.

The Algorand Foundation is a non-for-profit community organization that focuses on maintaining the blockchain community, furthering research into blockchain technology, and maintaining the governance of the network.

Algorand, Inc. focuses on developing the technical features of the network.

How To Buy ALGO

To buy ALGO, follow the procedure for buying other cryptocurrencies. First, create an account on a crypto platform, like Binance.US, that offers the ALGO token.

The right platform will give you the ability to:

  • Buy, sell, and trade other cryptocurrencies
  • Minimize the fees associated with each transaction
  • Access the tools and information that can help you make the right choices

Second, verify your identity on the crypto platform and fund your account with fiat currency (government-backed money such as U.S. dollars).

Most crypto ecosystems will give you more than one way to do this, including:

  • Bank or wire transfer
  • Debit or credit card
  • Link to an existing bank account
  • Some other established payment service, such as Apple Pay (not available on all platforms)

Third, log in to your account and specify how much ALGO you want to buy and when you want to buy it. Fourth, store your newly purchased ALGO in a crypto wallet.

Crypto wallets come in two standard configurations:

  • Cold wallets - Offline storage spaces like external hard drives
  • Hot wallets - Online storage spaces provided by the crypto platform

Cold wallets are the most secure but can be difficult to access and are at a higher risk of being lost or corrupted. Hot wallets are also secure, even though they’re online, and are immediately available.

How To Sell ALGO

To sell ALGO, start by opening an account on a crypto platform, like Binance.US, if you haven’t already.

Once you’ve opened an account and verified your identity, fund the account with fiat currency so you can buy ALGO, or transfer ALGO from another crypto ecosystem.

When you’ve got ALGO in your account, it’s just a matter of specifying the amount of ALGO you want to sell and when you want to sell it.

Some crypto ecosystems give you multiple options for doing this:

  • A market order, which would begin the sale immediately at the current market price, which can change quickly in volatile markets
  • A limit order, which would wait to begin the sale at a future market price, which you determine
  • A stop order or stop-loss order initiates a market sell order once a predefined price, known as the stop price is reached

When the sale of your ALGO is complete, the system will deposit the equivalent fiat currency in your account for you to use to purchase other cryptocurrencies, withdraw, or pay for products and services.

How To Trade ALGO

Trading ALGO is just like buying and selling it and follows the same steps.

  • Open an account with a crypto platform that allows users to trade ALGO
  • Fund your account with the fiat currency of your choice
  • Purchase ALGO through this platform or transfer it from another platform
  • Use the tools, information, and resources provided by the platform to create and initiate a trade

Keep in mind that the cryptocurrency market changes very quickly, and trading ALGO — or any cryptocurrency, for that matter — can be extremely difficult to time and execute correctly.

Before you initiate any trade orders, research and analyze the market to develop a strategy to guide your decision-making process.

How To Stake ALGO

If you’re looking for a way to earn rewards without buying, selling, or trading, try staking your ALGO.

When you stake ALGO, you dedicate some or all of your holdings so that the platform can use them to secure the Algorand blockchain and the proof-of-stake network on which it operates.

After you stake your ALGO, the crypto ecosystem generates rewards based on a number of different factors, including:

  • The amount of ALGO staked
  • Transaction fees accumulated from circulating assets
  • Newly created block incentives

As with buying, selling, and trading, the right crypto platform — like Binance.US — will make staking ALGO as simple, secure, and convenient as possible.
