About BCH

What Is Bitcoin Cash (BCH)?

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is a cryptocurrency based on the original Bitcoin blockchain. More specifically, BCH is a peer-to-peer electronic cash system that was designed to be a transactional currency rather than a pure store of value.

Bitcoin Cash was also designed to address and improve scalability and utility issues inherent in the original Bitcoin protocol.

How Does Bitcoin Cash (BCH) Work?

Bitcoin Cash operates on a proof-of-work (PoW) consensus mechanism that makes use of large block sizes (anywhere from 8 MB to 32 MB) to settle transactions. These larger block sizes allow for increased, near-instantaneous processing speeds.

The speed at which the BCH blockchain can reach consensus on a transaction makes it possible for those who own BCH to use it for grab-and-go retail purchases like paying for a tank of gas or buying a cup of coffee.

The original Bitcoin cryptocurrency would not be useful in such situations because it can take nearly 40 minutes for the blockchain to reach consensus and finalize a transaction.

History of Bitcoin Cash (BCH)

Because of the way it was designed, the original Bitcoin cryptocurrency suffered from long transaction verification times and high transaction fees. Some in the Bitcoin community suggested increasing the block size limit to fix these problems.

Larger blocks would be faster but would also mean that fewer nodes (users) on the network would have the computing power necessary to run the blockchain calculations.

In essence, larger blocks would mean less distribution and more centralization — the opposite of the decentralization that lies at the heart of all cryptocurrencies.

Years of debating reached their conclusion on August 1, 2017 when developers implemented a hard fork that created a brand new cryptocurrency — Bitcoin Cash (or BCH for short) — which allowed for larger blocks and faster transaction speeds.

After the fork, BCH processes an average of 116 transactions per second, while Bitcoin remains at around seven transactions per second.

In addition, BCH’s transaction fees are usually less than $0.01, while Bitcoin’s transaction fees typically range from $1 to $5 or more during peak network congestion.

How To Buy BCH

Buying BCH starts with finding a crypto platform — like Binance.US — that allows you to purchase the digital asset.

It’s also important to consider variables other than just the availability of BTC. A good platform will offer reasonable fees, tools, and resources to help you make decisions and access other popular cryptocurrencies on the market.

Once you’ve found the right platform, the next step in buying BCH is to create an account and fund it with fiat currency (e.g., U.S. dollars).

Depending on the platform, you can accomplish this through one of several methods, including:

  • ACH from an existing bank account
  • Debit card
  • Bank or wire transfer
  • Other established payment services, such as Apple Pay (check platform for details)

When the fiat currency reaches your account, you can use it to purchase BCH by choosing how much you want to buy and when you want to buy it.

Once you have the BTC, store it in a crypto wallet — either the cold version (an offline space like an external hard drive) or the hot version (an online space typically provided by the platform through which you made the purchase).

How To Sell BCH

On most platforms, selling BCH is just as easy as buying it. The process starts with creating and funding an account on an established crypto platform — like Binance.US — that allows for the buying and selling of your chosen asset.

Once you’ve created the account, you can either fund it with fiat currency and purchase BTC, or transfer BTC from another platform.

Once you hold BTC on the platform you can sell it in a few different ways, including via market order at the current market price, a limit order at a future price you indicate, or a stop-limit order (sometimes known as a stop-loss), where you can set a stop price to trigger the sale at market price.

When the sale is complete, the funds will be deposited into your account, and you can then use the money to buy other cryptocurrencies or pay for products and services.

How To Trade BCH

If you’ve bought or sold BTC, you can also trade it through much the same process.

Open or log into an account on a crypto platform, like Binance.US, that offers trading activities. Then, fund the account with fiat currency so you can buy BTC, or transfer BTC from another platform.

Once you have BTC in your account, you can start trading to build your portfolio.

But before doing that, it’s essential to research and analyze the market. Trading BTC, or any cryptocurrency for that matter, can get complicated sometimes, so prepare yourself by creating a strategy and sticking to it.

Consider using Binance.US for low fees and a large selection of cryptocurrencies (including BTC) to choose from.
